Description

We are part of the nation-wide Abbeyfield Society whose head office is in St Albans, Hertfordshire. SSAFA was involved with the initial funding of Ainslie House and we have an affinity with the armed forces. Ainslie House is a residential home for the elderly and lonely. It is not a care home - no nursing care is provided but can be arranged individually by residents if necessary. Residents have their own en suite rooms and the Housekeeper prepares and serves the two main meals of the day. Residents prepare their own breakfasts in their rooms with provisions from the House. Residents need to be fit and able to look after themselves and their rooms although domestic help can be bought in by individual residents if they wish. The emphasis is on independent living. We have a Residents' lounge with a TV and DVD and comfortable armchairs. There is also a lovely garden, very secluded and surrounded by the trees of the neighbouring gardens.

The House is run by two teams of volunteers: the Executive Team looks after all finances, building repairs etc., and the House team selects residents from applications received, engages staff and generally ensures that the Residents are as comfortable and content as we can make them.

We need more volunteers to help us do this. Most of us on the House team have been working together for 20 or more years and are not getting any younger! We need volunteers who are able to get along well with elderly people and are sympathetic with the difficulties of aging. We have a weekly rota comprised of members of the House Team who are 'on call' for their week of duty. This can be as little or as much as volunteers wish to make it and as it fits in with their own commitments elsewhere. Most of our rota team make a point of coming into Ainslie House 2 or 3 times during their week of duty to see how things are with both staff and residents and also stay and enjoy lunch or tea with the residents.

The emphasis at Ainslie House is on homeliness and enjoyment. Residents are encouraged to pursue their own interests and if they wish to have gatherings in the form of coffee mornings, sherry parties etc. this is enthusiastically encouraged by both staff and House team members.

We would love to hear from you if you fulfill the requirements outlined in this description.
