The Picturesque Society was formed in 1992 to meet the need for formal and scholarly recognition of the Picturesque Movement and to develop a deeper understanding of its position within the Romantic Movement. The Picturesque Movement had its origins in Herefordshire in the late 18th Century. It promotes research into all matters of Picturesque import internationally. Research findings and scholarly contributions are published in a quarterly journal 'The Picturesque'. We are a Hereford based society with an international membership having members as far afield as the U.S.A. and New Zealand. The Picturesque Society membership includes The National Gallery, London: The National Museum of Wales, Cardiff: The Victoria & Albert Museum, London: The Winterthur Library, U.S.A.: The Historic Scotland Library, Edinburgh: English Heritage, N.M.R.C. Library, Swindon: Gainsborough's House Museum & Art Gallery, Sudbury, Suffolk. Membership of the Society is by annual subscription.
